EURO STOXX Paris-Aligned Benchmark

Index Description

The STOXX PAB Indices are based on liquid securities from a selection of STOXX Benchmark Indices. They follow the EU PAB (EU PAB) requirements outlined by the European Commission on climate benchmarks. Companies identified as non-compliant based on ISS ESG's Norms-based Screening. or are involved in Controversial Weapons or Tobacco Production are not eligible for selection. Securities that generate revenues above a certain threshold from coal, oil and gas exploration or processing activities, or from fossil fuel-based power generation are not considered for selection. Furthermore, STOXX will exclude companies that ISS ESG assesses to have Significant Obstruction in the UN SDGs 12,13,14 and 15. The weighing process follows an optimization process with the aim to reduce their greenhouse gas intensity by at least 50% when compared to their underlying benchmarks and to meet the year on year 7% decarbonization target.

  • The emissions pathway of the indices must be below the carbon budget for the IEA Net Zero by 2050 pathway based on target projected emissions of the current year and 2050
  • The index maintains a maximum ex-ante tracking error of 1.5% relative to its parent, calculated using the Axioma optimizer

Performance and annual returns

Methodology

The indices use ISS ESG’s Carbon Budget and Scenario Alignment data to ensure their emissions trajectory remains below the IEA Net Zero by 2050 pathway, based on projected emissions from the current year through 2050. Weighting is determined through an optimization process that incorporates free-float market capitalization, carbon risk ratings, and corporate target setting scores. Companies with verified science-based targets and consistent GHG intensity reductions receive higher weights, while those without commitments are penalized. The methodology enforces strict constraints: a minimum 60% reduction in Scope 1+2+3 GHG intensity versus the benchmark, a 7% annual decarbonization rate since 2022, and a green-to-brown revenue ratio at least four times that of the benchmark. Sector and country exposures are capped within 5% of the benchmark, and tracking error is limited to 1.5%.
